The DeathRattle by ToadWorks

While searching Ebay for new toys I came across a distortion/boost pedal called "The DeathRattle" by Toadworks. I checked it out on Harmony-Central.com and saw many glowing reviews, so I took a chance and purchased it.

This stomp box offers two different flavors of distortion modeled after vintage Fender Tweed and Marshall Plexi amplifiers. You can switch between these two sounds and there are convenient LEDs to let you which model you are switching to. There is also a boost function, which can be activated with, or independently of, the overdrive section.

The sounds were excellent, but both Tweed and Plexi channels shared a common gain pot, which limited its flexibility. It turned out that my unit was an earlier design for which an upgrade was offered by Toadworks.

I opted to get the upgrade done and was simply floored by the unbelievable attention to detail and work ethic shown by Toadworks president, Ryan Dunn. It is worth mentioning here that Ryan Dunn takes customer service more seriously than anyone I have ever dealt with. After the upgrade was performed in what must be the shortest turn-around-time ever, I found I could substitute The Death Rattle for my Boss Blues Driver, an MXR Micro Amp, and my Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive, all of which are excellent pedals in their own right.
